Redefining FOMO

In our modern world, we are constantly bombarded with marketing messages telling us that we are missing out. Missing out on fun, perfection, love and acceptance. If only we buy this, attend that or participate in such… then our lives will be complete.

This constant stream of messages that tell us we have to do it all, have it all, BE it all… it fuels this constant feeling that we are not enough. Because, guess what… we simply can't do it all, have it all and be it all.

I read an article in Flow Magazine recently that pointed out that we are destined to miss out on more than we participate in. Since our options are endless, and there are only so many hours in the day… it is impossible to do it all. We can only do a fraction of the things that we could theoretically be doing. So, since we are -per definition- going to miss out… we may as well embrace it!

Fear Becomes Fun!

Consider though, the fun of having our friend tell us about the amazing show you didn't get to see. Or the neighbour coming over to tell you about the amazing new course she is taking. What if we can listen to these stories. What if we can discuss our thoughts, opinions and feeling about these things together. What if we can provide new insight because we saw something else about the topic, or read something about it in the news paper. What if…

What if we actually embrace the fact that we don't have to do it all, that we can "miss out" and let that add interest to our life.

What if the Fear Of Missing Out, could become the Fun Of Missing Out?
